The group that participates in Close Up goes to Washington D.C. every other year. They get a book entitled "Current Issues." Current Issues 2009-2010: Critical Policy Choices Facing the U.S. and the World brings you face-to-face with the hottest issues and the most controversial debates in the U.S. today. The 31st edition includes cutting-edge discussions on the war in Iraq, stem cell research, immigration, global warming, Internet neutrality, and much more. Current Issues presents the facts on public policy issues, and provides the tools and knowledge needed to think critically, discuss intelligently, and make informed decisions. Public policy is rife with complexity. Current Issues answers the call for clear, balanced explanations. In each of twenty chapters, three key questions provide information and opportunity for reflection. This year’s questions address timely, relevant issues such as the U.S. government’s role in promoting food safety; helping students pay for college; fighting AIDS in Africa; and capping greenhouse gas emissions and making use of alternative fuels.
The group gets this book the previous fall before they go to D.C. in the spring. Before they do this, they must raise enough money for the trip. They start raising money two years before the trip. The way that the group makes money for trip is by doing raffles, 50-50, dinners, pop-a-shot, and ice cream sundae social and they also sell wreaths and poinsettias. The group will have to earn approximately $10,200 dollars altogether to go to D.C.President |
